The main role of the “Kampfpistole” was signaling, lighting, marking targets, or concealment using a smoke grenade.
Later, during World War II, explosive shells were developed to give WH troops a small, lightweight grenade launcher to engage short-range targets that could not be satisfactorily engaged by infantry or artillery weapons without endangering Allied troops.
