The US M1 "Thompson" or US M1A1 "Thompson" was developed in early 1942 as a simplified and improved version of the US M1928A1 "Thompson" and declared an ordinance in April 1942.
It was supplied with 30-round magazines, but could also accommodate existing 20-round magazines.
The drum magazines of the US M1928A1 "Thompson", however, no longer fit the US M1A1 "Thompson".
Production records show that a total of 539,143 US M1A1s were produced from 1942 to 1944 by Savage and Auto-Ordnance for the U.S. Army Materiel Command, as follows :
- 8,552 in 1942
- 526,500 in 1943
- 4,091 in 1944
