The gyrojet is a family of unique firearms developed in the 1960s and named after the gyroscopic stabilization method of its projectiles.
Rather than inert bullets, gyrojets fired small rockets called Microjets, which had little recoil and didn't require a heavy barrel or chamber to withstand the pressure of combustion gases.
Exit velocity was very low, but increased to around 380 m/s at 9 m.
The result is a very light, portable weapon.
The fuse (180-grain rocket projectile) leaves the barrel with low energy and accelerates until the fuel is exhausted at around 18 meters, at which point the 180-grain fuse has a velocity of around 380 m/s, with around twice the energy of an ordinary .45 ACP bullet.
Around 1,000 “Rocketeer” model pistols were produced; some were used in the Vietnam War.
