Towards the end of the war (1943/44), the Portuguese received a number of MG34s from Germany. Contract with Portugal and the designation “Metralhadora M 944”.

The machine guns shipped to Portugal were standard MG34s, straight off the production line.

All the guns have the WaA63 “dot” code, manufactured by Waffenwerke Brünn in the Czech Republic, dated 1943 or 1944, in the standard configuration.

The only differences with the German MG34s were the additional markings: the Portuguese machine guns bore the words Konstruktion Rheinmetall-Borsig and a serial number (the highest observed so far was around 750) on the top covers, and the pistol grips were engraved “A” for Tiro Automatico (automatic) and “T” for Tiro-a-Tiro (single-shot).

According to Rheinmetaill records, a total of 1,000 MG34s were purchased, divided into two shipments, one of 400 and the other of 600 machine guns.

And they were sold for RM2,960 each.
