After a few years of combat use, it was discovered that a large number of heavy machine gunners killed in action had been shot in the head.
Steps were taken to find a solution to this waste of soldiers, and an extension called the Vorsatzfemrohr MG Zieleinrichtung was introduced as an accessory to the MG Z and MG. Z 40.
This device was nothing more than a periscope, enabling the gunner to keep his head lower when aiming the heavy machine gun.
The MG Z 40 periscope and optical sight were first presented in a German army newsletter dated November 10, 1942.
Without the reduction sleeve, it was possible to mount the periscope on the MG Z (Ø30mm).
The transport boxes had to be rebuilt to make room for this new accessory.
