The origin of this weapon is not known.
The type 44 rifle, introduced in 1911, was originally intended for mounted troops in Manchuria.
The absence of the MUM (Chrisentème, symbol of the Emperor) indicates that this was an export model.
In 1914, France and England signed import contracts with Japan.
The folding bayonet is permanently fixed under the stock.
These weapons were only produced until the end of 1942, and distributed mainly to troops serving in the jungle.
