The receiver of this carbine features standard Winchester markings with an “ATW” on the heel, indicating a rifle made using a breech housing that was started in 1943 by Underwood and transferred at the end of his contract to Winchester, who chopped and assembled them in 1944.
Winchester added the letters “W” & “A” on the bevel of the breechcase around the Underwood “T” already present on these cases.
Only around 25,000 M1 rifles from s/n 2'38x'xxx to 2'404'92 bear the “ATW” mark.
