Simple yet effective, Soviet anti-tank rifles proved their worth on the battlefield.

Although armor advanced rapidly throughout the Second World War, one of the most famous incidents involving the successful use of the PTRS-41 occurred during the Battle of Stalingrad, when one of them was positioned on the roof of a fortified apartment building that Red Army defenders held for 60 days, between September 27 and November 25, 1942, in the face of the Wehrmacht offensive ; the downward-facing PTRS-41 ambushed numerous unsuspecting German tanks, knowing that the tanks were unable to raise their weapons sufficiently to fire back, and penetrated the thin armour of their turret roofs, causing enormous damage to the crews inside.
