In 1942, a detachable grenade launcher called the “Gewehrgranatengerät” or “Schießbecher” was introduced. Developed on the basis of grenade launcher models designed during the First World War.
For these various tasks against infantry, fortifications and light armored vehicles, several specialized grenades were developed for use up to 280 m away.
These were accompanied by special propulsion cartridges that fired a wooden projectile through the barrel into the rifle grenade, which, on impact, automatically primed and propelled the rifle grenade.
The 30 mm Schießbecher grenade launcher could be fitted to any Karabiner 98k, but could also be mounted on the Karabiner 98a, G98/40, StG44 and FG42.
