The Beretta 9mm Para Model 38/42 is basically a simplified Model 38A;

- The weapon used two triggers. The front trigger for semi-automatic fire and the rear trigger for automatic burst fire.

- The barrel jacket is not used with the 38/42, and all Model 38/42s have a fixed firing pin.

- The 38/42 uses a stamped receiver and magazine.

- The 38/42 has a fluted barrel (at the start of production); smooth-bore 38/42 models are called 38/43 by Beretta.

- The MAB 38A's four-slot compensator has been reduced to two slots.

List of versions, built on the basic M1938 submachine gun model, with major modifications compared to previous versions:

Beretta M1938/42 (M38/42): the barrel jacket is removed, the barrel is shortened and grooved.

Beretta M1938/44 (M38/44): smooth barrel (not grooved); simplified recoil spring; raised rear sight.

Beretta M1938/49 (M38/49): the lever safety is replaced by a transverse bolt safety, in the form of a large oval knob, located in the middle of the stock. Overall build quality is improved compared to the guns produced during the war.

Beretta Model 1: experimental model with folding stock for paratroopers, produced in 1941; it features an unsheathed fluted barrel and extended magazine, pistol grip and folding metal shoulder stock.

Beretta Model 2: a folding stock model for paratroopers, produced in 1951; externally, it was similar to the Model 1, but had the breech and safety of the M1938/49.

Beretta Model 3: evolution of the Model 2, developed in 1955, with automatic firing pin safety and telescopic steel wire stock.

Beretta Model 4: identical to the M1938/49, but with a different designation.

Beretta Model 5: similar to the Model 4 (M38/49), but the manual safety is replaced by an automated safety (the safety is deactivated only if the button on the stock is pressed by the non-firing hand). Пистолет-пулемет Beretta Model 2 являлся “складным” вариантом M1938/49.
