The MAS-38 was officially adopted by the French government in 1938 and production began in 1939, but only a few were in service when Germany took control of France in 1940.
Little use was made of it during the Second World War, and shortly after the war it was replaced by the more powerful MAT-49 submachine gun, although a few MAS-38s were used at the start of the Indochina War.
In law enforcement, on the other hand, the MAS-38 survived for at least two more decades.
Generally speaking, the MAS-38 was a pretty good weapon, reliable and fairly accurate and controllable, its only problem being the insufficient power of the 7.65×20 Long ammunition, which considerably limited its effective range.
